Fallout 3 also falls under that catagory, while Mass Effect is an RPG with FPS elements set in a sci fi setting, Fallout 3 is set in a post apocalyptic setting with lots of big guns and mutants. It's awesome. Bioshock is another FPS must have, very creepy and stylish FPS that has a good story and lots of branching choices, no online multiplayer though if you need that. Also try Crackdown, Fable 2, Dead Rising (if you like zombie stuff), The Orange Box, Oblivion, Gears of War, Overlord, Resident Evil 5, Left4Dead. And although you didn't mention it, you might want to get Rock band or guitar hero, both have decent 1 player playability and are perfect for having friends over.
