If you loved the Capcom masterpiece, Bionic Commando on the Nintendo Entertainment System from 1988 (the NES ) then you will LOVE this new Bionic Commando also from CAPCOM, masters of bringing old school retro 2d games back with 3d elements but retaining their 2-D charm. 2008 has been a great year on Xbox Live, we got 1942 Joint Strike and now Bionic Commando. This are reports that we’ll be getting a full scale newly made 3D style of Bionic Commando for the Xbox 360 and / or Playstation 3 PS3 video game systems. However I have a hard time believing it’ll be any better than this. Rumor has it that Mike Patton of Faith No More fame and Mr. Bungle is doing voices??? Is that true? Squeeze me macaroni, that’d be awesome. Capcom is also working on releasing Street Fighter 4 sometime soon and Mega Man 9…. Holy crap!! What do they put in the water over there at Capcom, awesome-juice? Give me some! Street Fighter IV will be amazing if this restyled, retooled August 13, 2008 release of Bionic Commando is any indication. For 800 Microsoft points you get Bionic Commando: Re-armed, the chance to get achievement points and play co-op with a friend. They even added multiplayer, holy bionic moly!! I play through the first part of the Resident Evil 5 demo available on the Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace. The only way to play this demo is to torrent it, burn it on a CD or DVD, and stay disconnected from Live everytime you want to play it.

I got Bionic Commando a couple of days ago but didn’t have the time to try it out before today, so what you’re seeing here is my first experience with the game, something I’d like to blame my bad swinging on
Yeah, the controls and mechanics takes some getting used to – it’s nothing like Spider-man where you can just hold down the web-swing buttons and your web will magically attach itself to the open sky.
When you start getting the hang of the widely criticized controls it’ll give you a good feeling of accomplishment, there’s too few a games today where the game mechanics are challenging and something you can get skilled at (other than just aiming a weapon really well in a multiplayer game)

As a BIG fan of Crackdown, games with an open world / large epic scenery always catch my attention more than anything else. While Bionic Commando isn’t necessarily a non-linear game, especially as you follow a waypoint system at all times, it feels very free because of the environment you’re in.

I hadn’t read anything about this game or seen any gameplay videos of it before I got it so I was pleasantly surprised actually to find out the gameplay doesn’t focus too much on gun fights. If you run and gun you’ll be running out of ammo pretty quick and you might find yourself in a position where you can’t reach and take out a large group of enemies shooting at you before you die.
So what you end up doing instead is tactical swinging all over the place, doing some fancy dodging, grabbing enemies with your bionic super-arm, crushing them, throwing them, throwing stuff at them, throwing them at stuff… you get the drift.

All in all, the game isn’t any sort of innovative masterpiece – also, I’ve never tried the original BC of 1988 so I can’t tell you what kind of justice it does the classic. BUT, that doesn’t mean the game isn’t fun, especially if these sorts of not-too-serious-pick-up-and-play games are your kind.
I’ve enjoyed it so far and I’m looking forward to playing through it all.

Some gameplay compilation of Bionic Commando, coming out for Xbox 360/PS3. The games release date is currently unknown for US, but thought to come out sometime Q2 2009. As said in the video, all this gameplay is from 2008. The game is made by Capcom of course so you know it has to be good, it looks like one of the must have action games of year.
